In a new mini-documentary, Lil Wayne, LeBron James, and others will look into the historic relationship between hip-hop and the NBA.
On the eve of the start of the 2023–24 NBA season on Tuesday (October 24), NBA on TNT published a short film on the two cultural forces that have enjoyed a special bond over the previous 50 years.
In addition to Wayne and LeBron, the nearly seven-minute video includes commentary from LL Cool J, T.I., Jadakiss, Big Boi, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Quavo, as well as Steph Curry, Shaquille O’Neal, and Carmelo Anthony.
The video begins with Kurtis B.l.o.w discussing how his legendary 1984 track “Basketball” was the first to bridge the gap between hip-hop and basketball.
The distinguished speakers also examine Hip Hop and the NBA’s common cultural roots, how legends like Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson entrenched the genre’s influence in the league in the ’90s and ’00s, and how that “symbiotic relationship” has grown to the present day.
“Most hip-hop artists want to be basketball players; most basketball players want to be hip-hop artists,” T.I. says with a smirk.
Basketball isn’t Lil Wayne’s only favorite sport to watch. The founder of Young Money now owns the Texas Ranchers, a Major League Pickleball team.
Weezy made the announcement in a press statement on Tuesday (October 24), stating that he will join the ownership team as well as function as a strategic advisor.
“Pickleball is having a moment, and I’m excited to be a part of the Texas Ranchers ownership group,” he said in a statement. “I’ve enjoyed watching and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join this team of owners.”
Other new pickleball owners, according to Statesmen, include The Kid LAROI, sports journalist and former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, 8VC venture finance partner Alex Moore, and The Ruia Family.
Major League Pickleball has grown to 24 clubs for the 2023 season, with LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes among the investors.
On the musical front, Lil Wayne’s new album Welcome 2 ColleGrove—his second full-length collaboration with 2 Chainz—is expected to be released on November 17.
The Southern rap legends revealed the lead single, “Presha,” which Bangladesh, Wayne’s “A Milli” partner, produced, last week along with the album’s release date and cover art.
